As reported in the July, 2009 issue of the Newsletter (Issue IV, pgs. 35-39.), three – then second year – students of RLICC have been engaged for their internships as Project Assistants at the Council of Europe (CoE).
They were involved in a project dealing with cultural heritage rehabilitation in South-East Europe. The Integrated Rehabilitation Project Plan/Survey of the Architectural and Archaeological Heritage (IRPP/SAAH) is a joint initiative of the European Commission (EC) and the Council of Europe (CoE). Participating countries are Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Montenegro, Romania, Serbia, “The Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia” and Kosovo.
Begun in 2003, IRPP/SAAH will end in November 2010, and as a conclusion, a comprehensive evaluation had to be completed for the CoE Secretariat to prepare its final report, in order to sustain the ongoing projects into major tools of co-operation in the South-East Europe region. The CoE Secretariat has appointed the RLICC to develop the methodology, prepare and carry out these so called sites evaluation missions in the nine countries. The evaluation meant visits to several monuments and sites and interviews with all local professionals and stakeholders involved in order to identify the accomplishments, collect specific information about the positive impacts and assess the current condition of the rehabilitation projects. Prof. Koen Van Balen supervised and Barbara Fogarasi coordinated the project, which also involved RLICC alumni Leandro Privitera, Thomas de Vos and Ben de Vriendt.
