With 936 properties of cultural, natural and mixed values in 153 countries inscribed on the World Heritage List, the Convention concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage has, without doubt, been a very successful tool in rallying the global effort for the protection, conservation and enhancement of the world’s cultural and natural diversity. This international treaty adopted on 16th November 1972 by the General Conference of UNESCO has, to date 188 State Parties as signatories, making it one of the most widely acceded conventions on the protection of the environment.

As my first contribution to the Newsletter, let me say at the onset, how privileged I feel for having been invited to join the RLICC, an institution of excellence that I have been associated with throughout my 20 years at UNESCO, and whose graduates I have worked with in many parts of the world. The RLICC is without doubt, one of the leading heritage conservation institutes in the world, placed within the knowledge hub of the Catholic University of Leuven. The laureate of our past, however, must be constantly nourished by new achievements, to maintain our relevance in a rapidly changing world.

At the moment the content of the newsletter was closed we were not aware of the publications in the Flemish press in August 2010 that would follow the discussion in the World Heritage Committee in Brazil of the reactive monitoring mission in Bruges earlier this year. Bruges is the birth city of the Raymond Lemaire International Centre for Conservation (RLICC), it is nowadays a World Heritage Site.

At the start of a new decade let us take a moment to look back to the past year. In 2009 we saw the global economical crisis rise to its peak with rippling effects to all sectors of life. Natural and lived-in environment became more and more fragile, and we also saw some violent examples of it as we watched pieces of Antarctica detaching and floating away. We saw swine flu sweep over our planet with paralysing effect. Wars and occupations continued despite the changes of heads of states and parties. On the other hand, at the end of 2009 everybody wished to think that perhaps the worst is behind us and we could start to look to a better future.
